The slow middle movement of Bartók's Piano Sonata, Sz. 80 (1926), marked Sostenuto e pesante. Repeated notes and chords move in a heavy, sustained tread, in metres that change almost bar by bar, from 3/2 to 9/4. This edition follows the first Universal Edition engraving of 1927, with Bartók's hand indications and his damping instruction in German, French and English.
