  • 73 measures

The first of Johannes Brahms's four Ballades, Op. 10, in D minor, headed 'after the Scottish ballad Edward' from Herder's Stimmen der Völker. An Andante in 4/4 leads to an Allegro ma non troppo in D major in triplets that builds to ff, before the opening returns, p sotto voce, over a triplet accompaniment. This edition follows the first printing by Breitkopf & Härtel, Leipzig, 1856, dedicated to Julius Otto Grimm.
