The prelude that opens Book I of The Well-Tempered Clavier. One broken-chord figure, played twice in every bar, carries a slow succession of harmonies over a long pedal on G to a close over C. Gounod later wrote his 'Ave Maria' above it. Edited from Bach's autograph of 1722.
