The third movement of Beethoven’s Piano Sonata in B-flat major, Op. 106, the “Hammerklavier”, composed in 1817–18 and published in Vienna by Artaria in 1819. An Adagio sostenuto in F-sharp minor at eighth note = 92, it is among the longest slow movements Beethoven wrote. Its two-note opening bar was a late addition, sent to Ferdinand Ries in London. Long lines unfold in ever finer figuration, shaded by una corda and tre corde. This edition follows Paul Dukas’s edition for Durand, 1915.
