The first movement of Beethoven's Piano Sonata in F minor, Op. 57, published in Vienna in 1807 and dedicated to Count Franz von Brunsvik. Allegro assai in 12/8: the hands open pianissimo two octaves apart, a short knocking figure sounds in the bass, and sudden fortissimo outbursts break in before the movement dies away to ppp. The name 'Appassionata' was added by a publisher after Beethoven's death. This edition follows Paul Dukas's Durand edition of 1915.
