The second movement of Beethoven’s Piano Sonata in B-flat major, Op. 106, the “Hammerklavier”, composed in 1817–18 and published in Vienna by Artaria in 1819. A brief Scherzo marked Assai vivace, at dotted half note = 80, turns the first movement’s thirds into a dry, playful dance. A dark trio in B-flat minor runs in triplets, a Presto in 2/4 breaks in, and an unbarred scale races up the keyboard before the return. This edition follows Paul Dukas’s edition for Durand, 1915.
