AriettaPiano Sonata in C minor · Op. 111 · II

Ludwig van Beethoven

The Arietta that closes Beethoven's last piano sonata, Op. 111, completed in 1822 and published in 1823. A simple C major theme in 9/16, marked Adagio molto semplice cantabile, is varied with ever finer divisions of the beat, through 6/16 to 12/32; long trills and high, shimmering figures then lead to a quiet close. The sonata has only these two movements. This edition follows Paul Dukas's Durand edition of 1915.
