The slow movement of Beethoven's Piano Sonata in D minor, Op. 31 No. 2, composed in 1801–1802 and published in Zurich by Nägeli in 1803; the nickname "Tempest" is not Beethoven's. An Adagio in B-flat major, it opens with a rolled chord and a melody answered high above, while the bass murmurs in drum-like triplet rolls; turns and quick runs decorate the line, and the movement ends quietly on a low B-flat. This edition follows Nägeli's first edition, compared with Simrock's issue.
