The third movement of Beethoven's Piano Sonata in A-flat major, Op. 26, published in Vienna in 1802: a funeral march on the death of a hero. Marked Maestoso andante, in A-flat minor and 4/4, its dotted chords tread slowly through distant keys; a middle section in A-flat major imitates drum rolls and fanfares before the march returns and closes quietly in the major. Beethoven later scored it for orchestra. This edition follows Heinrich Schenker's Universal Edition.
