The first movement of Beethoven's Piano Sonata in A-flat major, Op. 26, published in Vienna in 1802: an Andante theme in 3/8 followed by five variations. The theme moves gently in full chords; the variations dress it in quick ornaments, set it in the bass under rapid chords, turn it into a syncopated variation in the minor and a light staccato one, and let it flow in triplets before a quiet coda. This edition follows Heinrich Schenker's Universal Edition.
