No. 9 of Schumann’s Davidsbündlertänze, Op. 6, eighteen character pieces first published in 1838 under the names of Florestan and Eusebius. It is headed by a sentence instead of a tempo word: “Hierauf schloss Florestan und es zuckte ihm schmerzlich um die Lippen” (Here Florestan stopped, and his lips quivered painfully). This edition follows the first version as printed in Clara Schumann’s collected edition (Breitkopf & Härtel, 1887).
