Love Song (Dedication)S. 566

Robert Schumann

  • Difficulty 8
  • A-flat major
  • 4 min
  • 73 measures

Schumann's Widmung opens Myrthen, the song collection he gave Clara Wieck as a wedding present in 1840, on a poem by Friedrich Rückert. Liszt's transcription, published in 1848, prints the poem's words over the melody. The calm middle section moves to E major over soft triplet chords; the return sweeps across the keyboard to a full climax, with Liszt's own ossia for bars 44–56. This edition follows Kistner's first separate edition, compared with its later engraving.
