Piano Sonata in B-flat minorOp. 35 · I

The first movement of Chopin's Sonata in B-flat minor, Op. 35, written in 1839 and published in 1840. Four slow bars marked Grave open onto a Doppio movimento: an agitated theme in breathless phrases over a pulsing left hand, then a broad, singing second theme in D-flat major. The development weaves the Grave's motif into the first theme; the recapitulation brings back only the second theme, in B-flat major, and ends fff. This edition follows the 1840 first German edition by Breitkopf & Härtel.
