Ballade No. 3 in A-flat majorOp. 47

Frédéric Chopin

  • Difficulty 9
  • A-flat major
  • 7 min
  • 241 measures

The third of Chopin's four ballades, composed in 1840–41 and published in 1841 with a dedication to Pauline de Noailles. The Allegretto in 6/8 opens with a gentle exchange between the hands, and a swaying second theme built on repeated Cs follows. After a restless passage in C-sharp minor the opening theme returns fortissimo in full chords, and the ballade ends in a brilliant close. This edition follows Carl Mikuli's Schirmer edition, compared with the German first print by Breitkopf & Härtel.
