Étude in E majorOp. 10, No. 3

Also known as Tristesse

Frédéric Chopin

  • Difficulty 6
  • E major
  • 4 min
  • 78 measures

The third of Chopin's twelve Études Op. 10, published in 1833 and dedicated to Franz Liszt. A singing E major melody, Lento ma non troppo, sits above an inner accompaniment in the same hand; the more animated middle section climbs through chromatic sixths in both hands to a fortissimo climax before the opening melody returns. The names 'Tristesse' and 'Farewell' are not Chopin's. This edition follows Maurice Schlesinger's Paris first edition.
