The Scherzo of Chopin's Sonata in B-flat minor, Op. 35, written in 1839 and published in 1840. In E-flat minor, it hammers out repeated chords and leaping octaves that climb by chromatic steps, with fierce crescendos and sudden contrasts. A Più lento trio in G-flat major follows, a songlike melody over a gently rocking left hand; the Scherzo returns, and the movement fades away on the trio's tune. This edition follows the 1840 first German edition by Breitkopf & Härtel.
