Chopin wrote his two Nocturnes, Op. 27, in 1835 and published them in 1836 with a dedication to Countess Thérèse Apponyi. In this Lento sostenuto in D-flat major, the left hand spreads wide sixteenth-note arpeggios in 6/8 under a singing melody that returns again and again, more richly ornamented each time and often doubled in thirds or sixths; outbursts marked con forza and a 48-note run lead to a quiet close. This edition follows Claude Debussy's 1915 Durand revision, with his fingering.
