Chopin's polonaise in A major, published in 1840 as the first of the two Polonaises, Op. 40, and dedicated to Julian Fontana. Marked Allegro con brio, it states its theme in full chords in the dance's rhythm; a middle section in D major follows, and the opening part returns to close the piece. The nickname 'Military' came later. This edition follows Breitkopf & Härtel's first German edition.
